How to Find Your Life’s Passion

Post image for How to Find Your Life’s Passion

Have you ever wondered how to find your life’s passion? Do you get up in the morning and jump out of bed, chomping at the bit to get to work?

If you had asked me not too long ago, I probably would have told you there’s no sense in finding your life’s passion because there’s no time in life to pursue it. Many people believe this to be true, as I did, but it is a pessimistic view of the world that is false. You can find it, and you can live that passion.

How to Know if You’re Ready

Some people truly aren’t ready to find out what is most meaningful to them in life. They’re quite happy living with their head in the sand and going with the status quo. Find out if you’re ready by answering the following questions as truthfully as possible:

  • Are you always looking for a new project to pursue but don’t seem to follow anything through to its finish?

  • Would you be willing to take a risk with your career if it meant following your passion?
  • Are you willing to make mistakes, learn from them, and not let failure get in your way?

If you answered, “Yes” to any of these questions, you’re probably ready to at least find out what you’re passionate about. Maybe you’re even ready to pursue it–but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

How to Find Your Life’s Passion

Get a blank piece of paper and a pen. Go ahead, I’ll wait…

Back? Great. Answer these questions on that blank piece of paper and then we’ll go from there:

  • What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

  • If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?

  • If you got fired or laid off from your job tomorrow, what would you do to make a realistic living?

  • What would you spend the majority of your day doing if you were rich and had all the money you could ever need?
  • What  are you really interested in and constantly wanting to learn more about?

Make sure you answer ALL the questions. Read over your answers and look for a reoccurring theme. To help you out, I’ll answer the questions as well, from my own perspective:

  • In my spare time, I love to create, help others, spend time on my computer, read, and write.
  • If I could have any job in the world, it would be what I’m already doing, marketing online.
  • If I got fired or laid off from my job tomorrow, I would do what I’ve already done–start my own business online.
  • If I had all the money I could ever need, I would still want to market online because I love it.
  • Obviously, I am super interested in internet marketing and am constantly wanting to learn more about it each and every day.

I’m a classroom teacher by trade. You can see why teaching seemed like an obvious choice to me when I was choosing my career. Planning lessons for the classroom takes care of my need to create and write; teaching scratches my itch to help others; and learning the teaching material gives me opportunity to read what I’m interested in.

However, here’s the problem. Classroom teaching does not address my interest in computers and online marketing. And as you can see from the way I answered the questions, that’s a big part of who I am.

By not fulfilling this part of me, I was denying part of myself. After a while, this really took its toll on my health.

Also, a while ago I realized that marketing on the internet in the organizing/personal development niche wasn’t enough. I wanted to teach, and write, and create, and organize, and start my own business.

It became blatantly obvious to me that focusing on the internet marketing niche and teaching others how to start their own online business in this niche was my REAL passion in life.

That’s why I ended up changing the focus of my blog somewhat.

What about you? Did you learn anything about yourself while answering those questions?

Hey, thanks for visiting. I just checked the links and everything’s okay. The only thing was the link for the ebook went into my spam folder because Yahoo didn’t recognize the address.

My bad. No Script, a Firefox security add-on, was blocking it.

If I had the time and financial independence, I’d be a full time fiction writer :)

But for now, I settle for writing a short story every Friday (such as the story linked in CommentLuv below) and making sporadic headway on my novel.

t’s not enough to find a passion, you have to have the right circumstances to be able to pursuit it. I know my passion since I’m 17 but I never was able to make my dream come truth. And believe me, I’ve tried. First I had my parents that wouldn’t let me study what I wanted, than I lost everything 2 times in my life and had to work so hard just to rebuild my family’s life again. After all that, I feel so tired that I’m not able to fight any more for my passion…

@Kosmo You’d be a great fiction writer–I love to write fiction as well. I think for a lot of us blogging is a great outlet that we are fortunate enough to have at our fingertips. That just gave me an idea for a post…better go write it down!

@Yasmine I completely agree with you. Many people are in a position where they can’t follow their life’s passion for whatever reason. I was in this situation for a long time. I’m very fortunate now that I’ve not only realized my passion (finally), but that I’m also in a position to pursue it. As I mentioned briefly in my post, I got very sick from not being true to myself. Sometimes we can modify our passion if only to grasp just a piece of it.

Finding our passion is one part but making a move towards realization is a great challenge. This is the lesson I have not easily learned because I was trapped in procrastination. In achieving our goals in life we must first start with conquering ourselves. :-)

Thank you Marnie for your response. I love your proposition to modify our passion and to pursuit it even when it means to do it partially. That could definitely be very interesting and you never know where it could take you. BTW, thanks for visiting my blog!

@Walter Procrastination is indeed a hard trap to escape from. In my new e-book I emphasize that action is the path to success.

@Yasmine My pleasure!
