How Failure Gets You Closer to Your Ultimate Goals

“Love the moment. Flowers grow out of dark moments. Therefore, each moment is vital. It affects the whole. Life is a succession of such moments and to live each, is to succeed.”

~Corita Kent

So many of us fail when trying to make positive changes in our lives.  This could happen for a variety of reasons:

  • we’ve taken on too much at once
  • we don’t have a real plan
  • we have no clue how to sustain the change

The list goes on.  But here’s where the big mistake comes in.

We give up.  Instead of learning from our failures and evaluating what went wrong (and what went right for that matter), we tend to shy away from making mistakes and by extension avoid anything uncomfortable.

The fear of failure, or even having failed already, stops many people from ever trying anything new.  When you stop trying new things, your imagination grows stagnant.  As a wise woman once said (okay, it was me :D ), how can you ever accomplish that which you’ve never even imagined ?

So, the first thing you need to come to terms with when thinking about personal development and positive life changes is that you absolutely, irrevocably will encounter failure.  Good for you!   Whether you are trying to better your financial situation or trying to lose weight, the recipe is the same–learn from your mistakes and find new ways to succeed.

The third step of the S.O.S. system, Streamline, is all about evaluating and changing what isn’t working.  When you realize something you have tried to accomplish, develop, or change isn’t working, change your plan and try again.  Get straight back on the horse, don’t wait until the “perfect” day to start again because I can promise you that day will never come–and believe me, I’ve waited!

When I realized the S.O.S. system worked, I thought I had it all figured out. I was going to share what I’d learned, and what  I learn  along the way, via my own blog.  However, something kept holding me back.  I was terrified.  What if I failed?

For over two years I explored the web and internet marketing before I put my mind to start my own blog.  There were so many hurdles to get over  I wanted to quit about a million times.  Luckily my husband kept cheering me on, despite the fact that he’d become a “computer widower”. :o

I plugged on, all too often concentrating on menial tasks that were getting me no closer to having my blog ready.  Every time I told myself  it was too hard and I couldn’t do it, I did it anyway.  When I messed up, I tried to figure out what was going wrong until I got it right. Every time I faced fear I had to ask myself the same question, “Are you gonna do this or not?”  And invariably the answer was, yes, I was going to do it.  Therefore, quitting was not an option.

And by the way, I am still faced with that question every time I fail or encounter a problem.  Answering it once doesn’t cut it.  My “brain” seems to still want to take the easy way out–stay with what’s comfortable and don’t try anything new in case something goes wrong.  And so each time I have to answer that voice in my head (I have many, so sometimes it’s hard to keep them straight ;) ) I give the same answer.

Fear never goes away–nor should it.  Fear can propel you forward at lightening speed or Fear can stop you dead in your tracks.  You choose.
